Paul Washe was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct (force or coercion) on Friday.

According to court records, the alleged sexual assault happened at an off-campus party on Dec. 5.

A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer was called to the Kalamazoo YWCA three days later to investigate a sexual assault complaint.

The probable cause document said a WMU student gave police a ‘detailed and credible’ statement that Washe forced her to have sex with him in the 1300 block of Fraternity Village Dr.

The document said the woman told three friends about what happened. All three were interviewed by police, who said their statements were consistent with the one provided by Washe’s accuser.

Washe told police he did have sex with the woman, but he said it was consensual.

Court documents say Washe was previously under a Title IX investigation for a separate sexual assault allegation four years earlier.

Washe, a Clarkston native, is a WMU graduate student and forward on the school’s hockey team.

He had eight goals and five assists in eight games for WMU this season before being suspended.

WMU Senior Associate Athletic Director Jeff Stone says the athletic department is aware of the charges against Washe, but had no other comment.

Washe’s next court hearing is scheduled for March 9.
