On Sunday, police said a 21-year old Western Michigan University student died after being hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Police said the hit and run happened near the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Howard Street in Kalamazoo on Saturday morning.

Kaylee Gansberg, 21, from Illinois passed away Saturday at noon in the hospital, hours after being hit by a 22-year old suspected drunk driver.

The suspect fled the scene and was driving the involved vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, according to police. The suspect was arrested on related charges and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

On Sunday, WMU’S Chi Omega, a sorority, Gansberg was a part of, took to Facebook to express their feelings on this news.

They called Gansberg “kind, outgoing and artistic.”

WMU said counseling services are available to students following the tragedy.

“We are saddened by this terrible loss of a young life cut short and extend our condolences to Kaylee’s family and other loved ones. Our focus is on providing support. We have therapists available to aid students, faculty and staff in processing grief and crisis.”

This is the second WMU student that was killed by a suspected drunk driver in less than a year.

Last November, 19-year old Bailey Broderick was hit by a car while walking off-campus on Fraternity Village Drive.

Hunter Hudgins, the driver charged in the crash that killed Broderick is awaiting trial.

There will be a memorial for Gansberg on Fraternity Village Drive at 5pm on Monday.
