A 13-year-old autistic boy died after he was hit by a car shortly after getting off his school bus last week. According to news sources, Zyair Harris was hit around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of east Nevada and Healy streets by a car that did not stop for the bus.

However, Harris’s mother says the school bus driver did not activate the stop sign on the bus and also did not help Harris across the street after letting the child off the bus. Harris was transported to a nearby hospital after he was hit, but died Sunday according to a GoFundMe established by the family.

Detroit police say the driver of the vehicle that hit Harris stopped at the scene. Police also say the bus driver was taken into custody and have referred the case to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of charges.
